A network of secret: A network of secret underground spaces was used by the military during World War II and other periods. Unusual features of underground bunkers reveal a little bit about their usage. One such bunker, for example, was a regular occurrence for parts of the US military in the Second World War, with 32 apparent locations. There were 28 known uses of the bunker during the war.
